I have found that I have a live soap opera playing for me everyday at work.
I work as a counselor at a day camp for 11-14 year olds. The camp is called 'moving on'. I enjoy it mostly except for when I have to punish kids for doing things that are against the rules and they know it.
So to continue with the title...
Last week on moving on...
(for privacy reasons I will not use names but numbers... so try to keep up)
Monday-
Girl 1 started to flirt with boy 1. (the passion patrol heightens and a speech was made by the counselors about a strict NO PDA policy.)(That is; Public Display of Affection)
Tuesday-
Girl 1 and boy 1 are 'official'. Girl 2 and boy 2 start to go out.
Wednesday-
Girl 1 and boy 1 are still going out with no issues or fights. (I think at this point I thought these pre-teens were more mature than a gave them credit for. Then the rest of the week followed to prove me wrong). Girl 2 breaks it off with boy 2 which included girl 2 telling girl 1 she was going to break up and girl 1 telling boy 1 who then told boy 2 he was going to be broken up with. Then girl 1 and girl 2 ran around trying to fix the mistake it was to tell anyone. The end result was a very distraught and sad boy 2 and a happy girl 2.
Thursday-
Girl 1 and boy 1 are still going out but have gotten in an argument about men going to hooters.
Boy 2 is happier today. After taking the night to get over girl 2. Boy 2 starts talking to girl 3.
Girl 3 was wearing a bikini at the pool sealing the deal with boy 2 and making it 'official'
Friday-
Girl 3 got a text from her ex-boyfriend saying he wanted to go out with her again. She said sorry I'm dating someone else. the X asked 'who do you like more?' Girl 3's answer was clear when she decided to break up with boy 2. Of course girl 3 told all her friends including girl 1 who told boy 1 who told boy 2. (sigh, at this point I intervene.... need to break up face to face blah blah Many fish in the sea...blah blah) Boy 1 somehow gets girl 3 and boy 2 to stand next to each other and tells them it is over. (yes that was boy 1 doing the break up, and yes I was standing right there watching. AND this was all before 9am)
So, we go bowling where girl 3 and boy 2 get back together and then girl 4 breaks up for girl 3 before three more frames of bowling.
THEN, the relationship we all thought would last. Get your tissues... girl 1 broke up with boy 1. (TRAGEDY!) Leaving room for a bet to be made between boy 4 and boy 3 that if boy 3 won he should date girl 1.
He won. Girl 1 is now with boy 3
We leave this week with girl 1 dating boy 3. Girl 2 with no one. Girl 3 with her ex. Boy 1 with no one. And boy 2 sadly, lonely.
And yes I get paid to watch this all happen before my eyes.
This is the reason there should be a few new laws.
1. No child under 16 should have a phone
2. No child under 18 should date
3. No boy should tell a girl they want to kiss them within 3 hours of "dating" at day camp. So romantic.
